JG Benda Rosso di Montalcino 2022
Produced by J.G. Benda in Montalcino, Tuscany, the Rosso di Montalcino 2022 is a beautifully refined expression of Sangiovese from one of Italy’s most prestigious wine regions. Founded by John Benda, a London-born winemaker who grew up in Rome, J.G. Benda represents a modern Montalcino story driven by passion rather than heritage. After a career in finance, John Benda followed his ambition to make wine, training with Alessandro Mori at the renowned Il Marroneto before establishing his own estate in Montalcino. Working organically in the vineyards, with biodynamic practices and a low-intervention philosophy, J.G. Benda focuses on producing wines that express purity, elegance and a true sense of place. The vineyards sit at high altitude, around 500–600 metres above sea level, where cooler temperatures, limestone-rich soils and natural biodiversity help preserve freshness and aromatic complexity in the grapes.
Made from 100% Sangiovese, J.G. Benda Rosso di Montalcino showcases the elegance and precision of this noble Tuscan variety. The wine is fermented with native yeasts and traditionally aged in large French and Slavonian oak botti, allowing the fruit and terroir to remain at the centre of the expression. Aromas of sour cherry, red plum and raspberry are layered with notes of violets, dried herbs, tobacco, spice and subtle earthy nuances. On the palate, it is vibrant and refined, with bright acidity, silky tannins and a long, savoury mineral finish. Combining the freshness of Rosso di Montalcino with the complexity and seriousness often associated with Brunello, this is a beautifully crafted Sangiovese that pairs wonderfully with Tuscan cuisine, pasta with rich sauces, grilled meats, roasted vegetables and aged cheeses.
