Description

Jean Foillard is one of the leading figures of the natural Beaujolais movement and a key member of the group known as the Gang of Four. Working primarily with old Gamay vines, the estate farms its vineyards with minimal chemical intervention and a strong focus on preserving the character of each site. The Cuvée 3.14 comes from the celebrated Côte du Py in Morgon, whose weathered schist and decomposed rock soils produce wines with greater structure, depth and mineral complexity than typical Beaujolais. The 2018 vintage was warm and generous, giving the wine ripe fruit and concentration while Foillard’s old vines and élevage preserve freshness and balance.

Made from old-vine Gamay, 3.14 is Foillard’s more concentrated and ambitious expression of Morgon, named after the mathematical constant p as a nod to its depth and complexity. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts and whole bunches, followed by extended ageing that allows the wine to develop without losing its freshness. The 2018 shows beautifully integrated maturity, with aromas of black cherry, wild strawberry, dried rose, liquorice and subtle earthy spice. Silky and concentrated on the palate, it combines supple tannins with savoury depth, fine acidity and a persistent, mineral finish. A serious Morgon with considerable ageing potential.
