Domaine Jean Foillard is one of Beaujolais' most celebrated estates and a leading figure in the natural wine movement. Based in Villié Morgon, Jean Foillard was inspired by Jules Chauvet and became one of the original "Gang of Four" producers who championed low intervention winemaking in Beaujolais. The Côte du Py vineyard is Morgon’s most renowned terroir, characterised by steep slopes of decomposed blue volcanic rock, schist and manganese rich soils. The estate farms sustainably using organic principles, avoiding herbicides and synthetic chemicals, with meticulous hand harvesting. The wines are generally considered vegan friendly, produced with minimal intervention and very limited sulphur additions. The 2023 vintage produced wines with excellent fruit concentration balanced by freshness and structure.

Jean Foillard Morgon Côte du Py 2023 is made from 100% Gamay sourced from old vines rooted deep in the famous Côte du Py hillside. The grapes undergo traditional semi carbonic maceration with indigenous yeasts, followed by ageing for approximately 6 to 9 months in a combination of used Burgundy barrels and large oak foudres. Bottling is carried out with minimal filtration and very low sulphur. The wine displays aromas of wild strawberry, black cherry and raspberry alongside floral, mineral and spice notes. The palate is silky yet structured, with remarkable depth, freshness and fine tannins. Drinking beautifully in its youth, it will continue to develop over the next decade. It pairs particularly well with roast poultry, duck, charcuterie, mushroom dishes and soft rind cheeses.
