The wine comes from Ipacs Szabó Birtok, a small family-run estate in the Villány region of southern Hungary. The vineyard covers about two hectares on south-facing slopes with loamy-clay soils and enjoys the warm, sunny sub Mediterranean-influenced climate typical of Villány.

The 2020 Nászút Helyett is crafted from 100% Cabernet Franc, a varietal locally dubbed “Villányi Franc.” Grapes were hand-harvested, underwent a period of cold maceration, then fermented with skin contact for around 19 days. After fermentation the wine was aged for about 19 months in a mix of Hungarian and French oak barrels (new and used). It displays concentrated dark-berry and black-cherry fruit, tobacco, spice and subtle cedar, with velvety tannins and a long, structured finish. A full bodied exciting red wine that benefits from decating. It pairs particularly well with grilled or roasted lamb or beef, charcuterie, robust stews or game.
