Hirsch Vineyards is one of California’s most revered cool climate Pinot Noir estates, located on the extreme Sonoma Coast near Fort Ross. Located in the Seaview AVA, that was established in 2012, which is a far smaller and more specific region than the vast West Sonoma Coast AVA. The Pacific Ocean exerts a defining influence here with vineyards just 3 miles from the coast. Founded by David Hirsch in 1980, the estate is known for its pioneering work in identifying and farming this remote, rugged site, which lies far from the more sheltered parts of Sonoma. The vineyards are planted across a series of distinct blocks at varying elevations, with Block 8 being one of the most celebrated parcels, considered their "Grand Cru" site. The soils are a complex mix of fractured sandstone, shale and marine sediments, high in iron oxide, low in fertility and well draining. This naturally limits yields, enhancing concentration and flavour in the grapes. The maritime climate brings fog, wind and cool temperatures, extending the growing season and preserving acidity. Farming is certified organic and biodynamic, with a strong emphasis on site expression and ecological balance. The 2020 vintage was shaped by a cool growing season followed by a warm finish, producing wines of purity, structure and aromatic intensity.

Hirsch Vineyards Block 8 Pinot Noir 2020 is made from, sourced from this single, distinctive parcel. The grapes are hand-harvested and fermented with indigenous yeasts, often with a proportion of whole cluster to enhance structure and aromatic complexity. The wine is aged for approximately 12 to 16 months in French oak barrels, with a moderate use of new oak to support the fruit without overwhelming it. The result is a finely detailed wine showing aromas of dark cherry, bramble fruit and violets petal, graphite layered with notes of spice, forest floor and a subtle saline edge from its coastal origin. The palate is elegant yet structured, with fine tannins, vibrant acidity and a long, mineral driven finish. It pairs beautifully with roast duck, game birds, mushroom dishes and soft cheeses. Drinking well with decanting, it will continue to evolve over the next 8-12 years. The wine has received critical acclaim, with scores in the mid 90s, and is often described as “a precise and site-driven Pinot Noir with remarkable energy and depth.”
