Giuseppe Mascarello Barolo Monprivato 2001

Giuseppe Mascarello is one of Barolo’s most historic and revered family estates, founded in 1881 by Giuseppe Mascarello in the village of Monchiero before later establishing its renowned cellars in Castiglione Falletto. Today, the estate remains family owned and is recognised as one of the purest expressions of traditional Barolo, with a philosophy centred on long ageing, respect for vineyard character and minimal intervention in the cellar. The legendary Monprivato vineyard is a south-west facing MGA in Castiglione Falletto, considered one of the finest sites in Barolo. Its calcareous marl soils, composed of Sant’Agata Fossili marl with layers of clay and limestone, provide the ideal balance of water retention, drainage and minerality for Nebbiolo. The estate farms using sustainable, traditional methods, avoiding excessive chemical intervention, although it is not certified organic or biodynamic. The 2001 Barolo vintage was outstanding in Piedmont, producing wines with excellent structure, aromatic complexity and exceptional ageing potential.

Giuseppe Mascarello Barolo Monprivato 2001 is made from 100% Nebbiolo, specifically the historic Michet clone cultivated in the Monprivato vineyard. The grapes are hand harvested and traditionally fermented with indigenous yeasts in large Slavonian oak vats, followed by extended ageing in large oak botti for around 36 months, with further bottle ageing before release. The wine displays classic mature Barolo aromas of dried cherry, rose petals, violet, tobacco, leather and earthy truffle notes, alongside hints of spice and balsamic complexity. The palate is refined and elegant, with silky tannins, vibrant acidity and remarkable length, showing the balance and finesse that define Monprivato. It pairs beautifully with truffle dishes, braised beef, game, aged cheeses and traditional Piedmontese cuisine. Now fully mature but still vibrant, the 2001 has entered a beautiful drinking window and can continue to evolve for another 10-15 years or more. The wine has received numerous exceptional reviews, including 95-100 point scores, with critics describing it as “one of the greatest expressions of traditional Barolo, combining perfume, elegance and extraordinary longevity.”
