FX Pichler Ried Klostersatz Gruner Veltliner 2024
Ried Klostersatz is one of the historic vineyards around Dürnstein, lying on the valley floor between the Danube and the lower slopes of the Wachau. Its deep loess soils over gravel retain more moisture than the region’s exposed terraces, giving the vines access to water during dry periods and producing Grüner Veltliner with greater breadth and supple texture. The sheltered position also favours steady ripening while preserving the cool, mineral character associated with the Wachau. In 2024, a relatively cool growing season and late ripening helped retain remarkable freshness and aromatic precision.
Harvested by hand, the grapes are gently pressed and fermented with natural yeasts before maturing in large wooden casks, allowing the wine to develop texture without losing its sense of place. The 2024 shows crisp green pear, white peach and yellow apple alongside subtle herbal and peppery notes, with a fine saline character emerging on the palate. Concentrated but never heavy, it combines the rounder texture of Klostersatz with the bright acidity of the vintage, finishing clean, savoury and distinctly stony. A beautifully balanced Grüner Veltliner with excellent food-pairing versatility.
