Produced by Fontodi in the heart of Chianti Classico, Case Via Syrah is one of Tuscany’s finest expressions of the variety and a reflection of the Manetti family’s commitment to terroir-driven winemaking. Since acquiring the estate in 1968, the Manetti family has transformed Fontodi into one of Italy’s benchmark producers, combining meticulous vineyard work with a philosophy centred on sustainability and respect for nature. The estate has been farmed organically for many years, with a holistic approach that promotes biodiversity, healthy soils and balanced vines. While Fontodi is best known for its outstanding Sangiovese, the warm amphitheatre of the Conca d’Oro in Panzano offers exceptional conditions for Syrah, where the combination of galestro soils, high elevations and significant day-to-night temperature variation produces wines of remarkable elegance and aromatic complexity.
Made from 100% Syrah, Case Via 2021 comes from a single vineyard planted specifically to explore the variety’s potential in Panzano. The wine is fermented with indigenous yeasts before ageing for around 18 months in French oak barriques, allowing the fruit, spice and mineral character to integrate harmoniously. The outstanding 2021 vintage produced a wine of exceptional balance, concentration and freshness. Aromas of blackberry, black cherry and wild blueberry are layered with notes of cracked black pepper, violet, smoked herbs, olive tapenade and subtle sweet spice. The palate is rich yet beautifully poised, with silky tannins, vibrant acidity and a savoury mineral backbone that carries through a long, elegant finish. Combining the generosity of Tuscany with the finesse more commonly associated with the northern Rhône, Case Via demonstrates the remarkable affinity between Syrah and the unique terroir of the Conca d’Oro, while possessing the structure to evolve gracefully for well over a decade.
