Description

Bodegas Rey Fernando de Castilla is a traditional Sherry producer based in Jerez de la Frontera in southern Spain, named after King Fernando III of Castile. The bodega focuses on high quality, aged wines sourced from select vineyards in the Jerez region, particularly those planted on albariza soils, a chalky white limestone that retains moisture and is ideal for Palomino. The warm Atlantic influenced climate, with hot summers and cooling ocean breezes, supports optimal grape ripening. The house specialises in long aged, oxidative styles matured in solera systems. Viticulture is largely traditional and sustainable, though not formally certified organic. As a non vintage fortified wine, this bottling reflects a blend of many years rather than a single harvest.

Antique Palo Cortado is made from 100% Palomino and aged extensively in a traditional solera system for an average of around 20 years or more. Initially developing under flor before transitioning to oxidative ageing, it combines the finesse of an Amontillado with the richness of an Oloroso. The wine is matured in seasoned American oak casks, concentrating its character over time. It shows complex aromas of toasted nuts, orange peel, dried fruit and spice, with a saline edge. The palate is dry, elegant and deeply layered with a long, persistent finish. It is drinking exceptionally well now and will remain stable for extended periods after opening. It pairs well with nuts, cured meats, rich soups and hard cheeses. It has received high critical acclaim, with scores of 95 points, described as a “profound and beautifully balanced Palo Cortado with remarkable depth and complexity.”
