Egly Ouriet Les Vignes de Bisseuil 1er Cru
Champagne Egly-Ouriet is one of the most revered grower-producers in Champagne, based in the Grand Cru village of Ambonnay in the Montagne de Reims. The family domaine dates back to the early 20th century and is now led by Francis Egly, whose meticulous vineyard work and low intervention philosophy have elevated the estate to cult status among enthusiasts. Elgy has expanded the estate with exceptional vineyard holdings including the Premier Cru site of Bisseuil in the Vallée de la Marne. The vineyards are farmed according to organic and biodynamic principles, with meticulous attention to soil health and very low yields. The terroir in Bisseuil consists of chalk subsoils with clay and limestone, contributing both richness and freshness. The grapes for this Champagne come from a 1.5 ha parcel in the village of Bisseuil, directly adjacent to the village of Ay. Based on the 2020 vintage which is defined as a historically early, "almost perfect" year that completed a rare trilogy of exceptional harvests (2018, 2019, 2020) by delivering gloriously ripe, concentrated fruit with a remarkable balance of vibrant freshness and aromatic purity.
Egly-Ouriet Les Vignes de Bisseuil 1er Cru is usually composed of approximately 70% Chardonnay, 15% Pinot Noir, 15% Meunier from old vines, fermented and aged in neutral oak barrels with indigenous yeast. The wine undergoes extended lees ageing for 52 months before disgorgement, enhancing depth and complexity. This release is based on the 2020 vintage (50%), supplemented by reserve wines from 2019 (30%) and 2018 (20%). It shows expressive aromas of baked apple, citrus peel, brioche and subtle spice, with a creamy yet precise palate and a long, mineral finish. It pairs beautifully with shellfish, roast chicken or creamy seafood dishes. Drinking beautifully now, it will continue to evolve for at least 12 years. Vinous awarded it 95 points, with Antonio Galloni noting it is “rich, vinous and wonderfully expressive, with striking depth and persistence.”
