Donnafugata Ben Ryé Passito di Pantelleria 2016 75cl
Produced by Donnafugata on the volcanic island of Pantelleria between Sicily and North Africa, Ben Ryé Passito di Pantelleria 2016 is one of Italy’s most celebrated sweet wines and a benchmark expression of sun-dried Zibibbo. Donnafugata is a leading Sicilian estate known for combining traditional island viticulture with precise, modern winemaking. The vineyards are trained as low bush vines (alberello pantesco) in protected hollows, helping shield them from strong Mediterranean winds. They grow on volcanic lava soils rich in minerals, which contribute to the wine’s distinctive salinity and aromatic intensity. The 2016 vintage has now reached mature development, showing clear complexity while retaining its structural freshness and vibrancy.
Made from 100% Zibibbo (Muscat of Alexandria), the grapes are hand harvested and partially sun dried on mats to concentrate sugars, aromas and acidity before vinification. Fermentation takes place with the gradual addition of dried grapes, building layered richness and aromatic depth. With extended bottle ageing, the 2016 vintage now shows developed complexity alongside its core freshness. Aromas of dried apricot, candied orange peel and fig are joined by honey, date, saffron, Mediterranean herbs and subtle spice. The palate is rich and opulent yet lifted by bright acidity and volcanic minerality, giving balance, energy and long persistence. It pairs beautifully with blue cheeses, almond pastries, fruit-based desserts and foie gras.
