Description

Domaine Tempier is one of the most iconic estates in Provence and the benchmark producer of Bandol, with a history dating back to the 19th century and a pivotal role in establishing the appellation’s reputation. Located near the Mediterranean coast in southern France, the estate is renowned for its dedication to Mourvèdre, the grape that defines Bandol’s structured and age worthy reds. The vineyards are planted on a mosaic of limestone, clay and sandy marl soils, often on terraced slopes that benefit from abundant sunshine and cooling maritime influences. These conditions allow for full ripening while preserving freshness and balance. Domaine Tempier has long practised organic farming, working sustainably with a strong emphasis on biodiversity and traditional vineyard methods. The 2023 vintage in Bandol was warm and generous, producing wines with ripe fruit, depth and a characteristic Provençal freshness.

Domaine Tempier Bandol Rouge Cuvée Classique 2023 is a blend led by Mourvèdre, typically around 70-75%, complemented by Grenache, Cinsault and small proportions of Carignan. The grapes are hand-harvested and fermented with indigenous yeasts, with careful extraction to preserve balance and aromatic complexity. The wine is aged for approximately 18 to 20 months in large oak foudres, allowing the tannins to soften while maintaining the integrity of the fruit. It displays aromas of blackberry, plum, garrigue herbs, spice and earthy notes, with a palate that is structured yet refined, supported by firm tannins and a long, savoury finish. It pairs beautifully with roast lamb, grilled meats, game and Mediterranean dishes rich in herbs and olive oil. The 2023 is approachable with decanting but will benefit from ageing, developing further complexity over the next 10-15 years. While not yet widely reviewed at the highest levels, the wine is consistently praised for its authenticity, balance and classic Bandol character.
