2019
I was able to taste numerous barrel samples of the 2018 Côte Rôtie, all rating between 95 and 99 points, which is a good sign! Most barrels were not destemmed and all the samples displayed inky colors, beautiful purity of fruit, classic Jamet style and complexity, and building tannins. Is this a remake of 1999? It has more upfront charm than the Côte Brune, but as with all great vintages of Jamet, 5-7 years of bottle age are rewarded. Domaine Jamet is located high up on the upper plateau above Côte Rôtie, around the village of le Vallin, and Jean-Paul and Corinne Jamet have been farming 25 different plots here, spread across 17 lieux-dits, since 1984. The majority of their holdings are located in the more schist-dominated Côte Brune side of Côte Rôtie (Chavaroche and Le Truchet being the largest) yet they also have prime real estate in Lancement and the Côte Blonde. The winemaking here is traditional yet not dogmatic, and the cellars are clean and impeccably kept. While Jean-Paul likes stems, there are plenty of parcels, and vintages, that see varying degrees of destemming and aging occurs mostly in demi-muids, with 15-30% being new. His Côte Rôties are bottled unfined and unfiltered after two years in barrel. Jamet’s wines represent a quintessential Côte Rôtie and possess incredible aromatics as well as a concentrated, structured style on the palate that rewards 5-7 years of bottle age. Top vintages of Jamet’s Côte Rôtie can evolve positively for 25 to 30 years.

Precise aromas of dark berry preserves, pungent flowers, pipe tobacco and smoky minerals; allspice and succulent herb nuances build in the glass. Broad, alluringly sweet and youthfully chewy, offering intense blackberry, cherry preserve, fruitcake and bitter chocolate flavors and a sexy candied violet flourish. Shows a compelling interplay of power and energy and finishes youthfully tannic and strikingly long, with lingering floral and mineral notes. (JR)

2019
It's never easy to prognosticate how the final assemblage will turn out, but I tasted eight different lots of the 2018 Cote Rotie, the least of which I rated (92 - 94), with some as high as (95 - 97). Overall, the wines are very ripe (le Plomb clocks in at over 15% alcohol), with supple tannins but also adequate freshness. Together, the result should be a full-bodied, rich yet lively wine, with notes of violets, hickory smoke, black olives and cassis. Based on past experience, I'd expect this wine to look firmer out of bottle than it does presently, with two decades or more of cellaring possible. (JC)
Description

Produced by Domaine Jamet in Ampuis, Northern Rhône, this is one of the benchmark wines of the appellation and a reference for traditional Syrah worldwide. The Jamet family has cultivated vines in Côte-Rôtie for generations, but it was Jean-Paul and Jean-Luc Jamet who established the domaine as one of the Rhône Valley’s true cult producers during the late twentieth century. Following the family’s split in 2013, Jean-Paul continued Domaine Jamet, preserving the estate’s unwavering commitment to traditional winemaking and terroir expression. Rather than producing single-vineyard bottlings, Jamet blends fruit from numerous small parcels across both the schist-rich Côte Brune and the lighter Côte Blonde, many planted with old vines on steep, hand-worked terraces. This philosophy creates wines of remarkable complexity and balance that are widely regarded as among the purest expressions of Côte-Rôtie. The warm and generous 2018 vintage delivered exceptional ripeness, yet Jamet’s meticulous vineyard work and restrained winemaking retained the freshness, perfume and precision that define the estate’s unmistakable style.

Made predominantly from Syrah with a small proportion of traditionally co-planted Viognier, Côte-Rôtie 2018 is fermented with indigenous yeasts before ageing for around two years in French oak barrels, only a modest proportion of which are new, allowing the vineyard character to remain at the forefront. The wine opens with intensely expressive aromas of blackberry, black cherry and damson layered with violet, smoked bacon, olive tapenade, cracked black pepper, graphite, lavender and subtle spice. Powerful yet remarkably refined, the palate combines silky tannins, vibrant acidity and profound mineral freshness with extraordinary depth and length. Despite the richness of the vintage, the wine remains beautifully poised and energetic, illustrating why Domaine Jamet is considered one of the world’s greatest interpreters of Syrah. Although already immensely impressive, it will continue to evolve gracefully for two to three decades. It is a magnificent companion to roast lamb, venison, duck, game birds, beef Wellington and wild mushroom dishes.
