Description

Domaine de la Grange des PÚres is one of the most revered estates in the Languedoc, founded in the late 1980s by Laurent Vaillé, who trained under leading figures such as Gérard Chave and Jean-François Coche-Dury. Located in the Hérault valley near Aniane, the estate quickly developed a cult following for producing wines of remarkable finesse and ageing potential that challenged perceptions of the region. The vineyards are planted on ancient terraces of limestone scree, galets roulés and red clay soils, providing excellent drainage and imparting structure and minerality to the wines. Viticulture is meticulous and low-yielding, following organic principles though not formally certified, with careful manual work in the vineyard. The 2016 vintage in the Languedoc was considered excellent, combining warm, dry conditions with enough freshness to produce wines of balance, concentration and aromatic clarity.

Domaine de la Grange des Pùres Rouge 2016 is a complex blend composed of 40% Syrah, 40% Mourvùdre, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Counoise, reflecting the estate’s signature balance of power, elegance and aromatic lift. The grapes are hand harvested and fermented with minimal intervention, followed by ageing for around 24 months in oak barrels, a mix of new and older wood, to build structure while preserving fruit purity. The wine opens with aromas of blackberry, cassis, garrigue herbs, spice and earthy minerality, leading to a palate that is both powerful and refined with firm, polished tannins and a long, persistent finish. It pairs beautifully with roast lamb, game, grilled meats and rich Mediterranean dishes. Drinking well with decanting, it still has significant ageing potential and can evolve for 15-25 years. The 2016 vintage has been highly acclaimed, with scores in the mid to high 90s, with one critic describing it as “a monumental wine with remarkable depth, precision and ageing potential.”
