De Martino Viejas Tinajas Moscatel 2018
De Martino is a historic, fourth generation family winery founded in 1934 by Pietro De Martino in Isla de Maipo, Chile, now led by Marco Antonio and Sebastián De Martino. The estate sources fruit from a wide range of terroirs across Chile, including old bush vines in the Itata Valley near Guarilihué, where the Viejas Tinajas wines originate. The Itata vineyards for Viejas Tinajas sit in a cool Mediterranean climate with strong maritime influence, planted on granite derived soils.
The De Martino Viejas Tinajas Moscatel 2018 is an orange-style wine made from 100% Moscatel de Alejandría from roughly 40-year-old bush vines. Hand-picked grapes are destemmed and whole berries placed in centennial clay tinajas for native yeast fermentation, with extended skin contact for six months followed by malolactic fermentation and further ageing in the same amphorae, unfined and unfiltered. The result is a bone-dry, intensely aromatic wine with lively acidity and complex notes of citrus peel, orange blossom and floral perfume. It pairs beautifully with seafood, fresh salads, grilled fish or light cheeses, and has the structure to age further in bottle.
