Col D'Orcia Poggio Al Vento Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2010

Col d'Orcia is one of Montalcino’s largest privately owned wine estates and among the appellation’s historic benchmarks, with vineyards stretching across the sun-drenched southern slopes overlooking the Orcia River. Owned by the Cinzano family since 1973, the estate has become renowned for producing Brunello that combines power, elegance and exceptional longevity. The vineyards benefit from one of Montalcino’s longest growing seasons, with abundant sunshine, cooling breezes from Monte Amiata and significant day to night temperature variation, allowing Sangiovese to achieve full ripeness while preserving freshness. The soils are a complex combination of galestro, limestone, marl and clay, providing excellent drainage and contributing depth, structure and minerality to the wines. The estate has long practised organic viticulture, with a strong focus on biodiversity, soil health and naturally balanced vines. The 2010 vintage is considered one of Brunello di Montalcino’s greatest, with a long and even growing season, warm days, cool nights and ideal harvest conditions allowing the grapes to develop exceptional concentration, refined tannins and vibrant acidity. The resulting wines combine power, elegance and remarkable ageing potential.

Col d'Orcia Poggio al Vento Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2010 is made from 100% Sangiovese, selected from the estate’s finest hillside vineyards and produced only in exceptional vintages. Following hand harvesting, the grapes are fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks with extended maceration to gently extract colour, flavour and finely structured tannins. The wine is matured for approximately 48 months in large Slavonian and French oak casks, followed by extensive bottle ageing before release, allowing the fruit, oak and tannins to integrate harmoniously while preserving the purity of the vineyard. It reveals complex aromas of black cherry, ripe plum, dried rose, violet, tobacco, cedar, leather, balsamic herbs and sweet spice, supported by earthy mineral notes. The palate is concentrated yet impeccably balanced, with refined tannins, vibrant acidity and exceptional persistence. It pairs beautifully with bistecca alla Fiorentina, roast lamb, venison, wild boar, truffle dishes and mature Pecorino. Although drinking magnificently now with decanting, the remarkable balance and structure of the 2010 suggest it will continue to evolve gracefully for another 15-20 years. The wine received exceptional critical acclaim, including numerous scores of 97-99 points, with James Suckling awarding 99 points and describing it as “a Brunello with fabulous depth, power and finesse.”
