Col D'Orcia Poggio Al Vento Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2004
Produced by Col d’Orcia in Montalcino, Tuscany, Poggio al Vento Riserva is one of the estate’s most distinguished and age-worthy wines, released only in vintages of outstanding quality. Established in 1890 and owned by the Cinzano family since 1973, Col d’Orcia is one of Montalcino’s historic estates, occupying the renowned south-facing slopes overlooking the Orcia River. These vineyards benefit from exceptional sun exposure, cooling breezes and the galestro and limestone-rich soils that have made the southern sector of Montalcino famous for producing Brunello of depth, elegance and longevity. Although today one of Tuscany’s largest certified organic estates, the 2004 vintage predates its official certification. Widely regarded as one of the greatest Brunello vintages of the last three decades, 2004 produced wines of remarkable harmony, aromatic definition and exceptional ageing potential, thanks to a near-perfect growing season and ideal harvest conditions.
Made from 100% Sangiovese, Poggio al Vento Riserva is produced only from the estate’s finest vineyard parcels before undergoing extended maturation in large oak casks followed by many years of bottle ageing prior to release. Nearly two decades after harvest, the 2004 displays the hallmarks of a mature great Brunello, with beautifully layered aromas of black cherry, dried cranberry, wild strawberry and plum intertwined with rose petals, violets, cedar, tobacco, leather, balsamic herbs, truffle, liquorice and earthy spice. The palate is wonderfully refined, combining silky, fully integrated tannins with vibrant acidity, savoury complexity and remarkable freshness, finishing with exceptional length and mineral precision. At a magnificent stage of evolution yet still capable of further development, it is a superb companion to bistecca alla Fiorentina, braised beef, venison, wild boar, porcini mushrooms, truffle dishes and mature Pecorino Toscano.
