90 - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2006
The 2004 Sociando-Mallet is a broodingly backward, concentrated wine with an inky blue/purple color as well as hints of graphite, crushed rocks, creme de cassis, and underbrush. Deep, chewy, structured, and tannic, it represents a long-term proposition. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2025+.
Description

Produced by Château Sociando-Mallet in Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne, Haut-Médoc, this is one of Bordeaux’s finest examples of a non-classified estate consistently producing wines that rival many of the Médoc’s Classified Growths. Despite never being included in the 1855 Classification due to its location outside the original classified communes, Sociando-Mallet has earned an international reputation for uncompromising quality under the ownership of the Gautreau family. Overlooking the Gironde Estuary, the vineyards benefit from deep gravel over clay soils and a maritime climate that favours the slow, even ripening of Cabernet Sauvignon, producing wines of remarkable structure, freshness and longevity. The superb 2004 vintage is regarded as one of Bordeaux’s most classical in recent decades, combining moderate ripeness with exceptional balance, vibrant acidity and outstanding ageing potential.

Made predominantly from Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot and Cabernet Franc, Château Sociando-Mallet 2004 was traditionally vinified before ageing in French oak barrels to refine its structure while preserving the purity of the fruit. After two decades in bottle, the wine displays an elegant bouquet of cassis, blackcurrant and plum layered with cedar, graphite, cigar box, tobacco leaf, leather, forest floor and subtle spice. The palate is beautifully composed, with finely resolved tannins, vibrant freshness and the hallmark mineral character that has made Sociando-Mallet a favourite among Bordeaux enthusiasts. Classical rather than opulent, it combines remarkable precision with impressive length and continues to evolve gracefully. It pairs beautifully with roast lamb, grilled beef, venison, duck, mushroom dishes and mature cheeses.
