96 - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2007
One of the candidates for “wine of the vintage,” the 2006 is potentially the finest La Fleur Petrus made since the late forties. Harvested prior to the region’s first big rain in mid-September, from yields of 30-36 hectoliters per hectare, it possesses atypical power, thickness, and richness, as well as a superb perfume of flowers, melted licorice, scorched earth, and abundant black and red fruits. Great intensity, a full-bodied, multilayered opulence, beautiful purity, and tremendous length suggest this stunning 2006 will be at its apogee between 2012-2030+.

2016
The 2006 Château La Fleur-Petrus has a fragrant, crushed rose petal bouquet mixed with raspberry coulis and wild strawberry scents, the oak beautifully assimilated and demonstrating fine precision. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, well-judged acidity, bright blueberry and black plum notes mixed with cedar and minerals towards the finish. This is turning into a très bon vin!
Description

La Fleur-Pétrus is one of the Right Bank’s great classic wines, combining the elegance of Pomerol with the remarkable consistency of the Moueix family. Situated on the celebrated plateau between Pétrus and Château Lafleur, the estate occupies one of the appellation’s finest terroirs, where deep gravel, clay and iron-rich soils produce wines of exceptional finesse and longevity. Acquired by Établissements Jean-Pierre Moueix in 1953, La Fleur-Pétrus has become one of Pomerol’s benchmark estates, renowned for its refined interpretation of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The 2006 vintage followed the outstanding 2005 and produced wines of classical structure, vibrant freshness and superb ageing potential, rewarding patience with increasing complexity and elegance.

Made predominantly from Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc and a small proportion of Petit Verdot, La Fleur-Pétrus 2006 was vinified parcel by parcel before ageing in French oak barrels to refine its structure while preserving the purity of the fruit. After nearly two decades in bottle, the wine displays beautifully layered aromas of black cherry, plum and blackberry intertwined with violets, cedar, cigar box, truffle, graphite, forest floor, tobacco and sweet spice. The palate is rich yet remarkably poised, combining silky tannins, vibrant acidity and exceptional mineral freshness with a long, graceful finish. Classical rather than opulent, it continues to evolve beautifully and remains capable of further ageing. It pairs magnificently with roast lamb, duck, beef Wellington, venison, truffle dishes and mature hard cheeses.
