95 - Vinous

2020
Translucent gold. A highly complex bouquet evokes ripe citrus and pit fruits, violet, candied fig and smoky minerals that show fine definition and spicy lift. Stains the palate with concentrated Meyer lemon, nectarine, melon and honeysuckle flavors that are supported by an undercurrent of juicy acidity. Densely packed and powerful yet surprisingly lithe as well. Shows outstanding energy and resonating mineral and floral qualities on an impressively long, sappy finish. Josh Raynolds

96 - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2019
Paradoxically, the 2016 Chateau Grillet seems more developed and yet fresher than the 2017. Caramel overtones frame notes of apricot and peach on the full-bodied, silky-textured palate, hung on a backbone of brine and citrus zest. Less opulent and flamboyant than the 2017, it could be described as more classic, and it will probably age a bit longer. Joe Czerwinski
Description

Château-Grillet is produced by the historic Château-Grillet estate in the northern Rhône Valley of France, one of the country’s smallest and most prestigious appellations. The estate has a winemaking history dating back centuries and occupies a rare monopole AOC entirely owned by a single producer. Vineyards are planted on dramatic steep terraces overlooking the Rhône River near Vérin, where the continental climate is moderated by southern exposure and reflected heat from granite slopes. The vineyards are cultivated sustainably with meticulous manual work due to the steep terrain. Soils are composed primarily of decomposed granite with quartz and mica, contributing to the wine’s distinctive minerality, tension and longevity.

The 2016 vintage is made from 100% Viognier, harvested by hand from low yielding old vines. Fermentation and ageing take place in oak barrels, with the wine matured for approximately 18 to 24 months on its lees before bottling, allowing complexity and texture to develop while preserving freshness. The wine displays layered aromas of apricot, peach and citrus peel alongside acacia blossom, honey, spice and smoky mineral notes. The palate is rich yet remarkably precise, with concentrated stone fruit flavours, vibrant acidity and a long, refined finish. It pairs exceptionally well with lobster, turbot, roast poultry in cream sauces and aged soft cheeses.

Château-Grillet 2016 received widespread critical acclaim from leading international wine critics and is regarded as one of the estate’s finest modern vintages. Wine Advocate awarded the wine 96 points, describing it as “more classic” in style with notes of apricot, peach, brine and citrus zest alongside impressive ageing potential. Vinous also scored it 95 points, highlighting its “highly complex bouquet” and concentrated palate of Meyer lemon, nectarine, honeysuckle and smoky minerals. Decanter praised the wine for its precision, richness and layered Rhône character, further cementing the reputation of this rare monopole Viognier.
