Charles Melton Wines is a respected family run winery in the Barossa Valley of South Australia, established by Charlie Melton in 1984. Charles Melton Nine Popes has a dedicated following among wine enthusiasts and is widely regarded as one of Australia’s classic GSM blends. Charles Melton is credited with reviving interest in oldvine Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro in the Barossa Valley at a time when many growers were removing these varieties and his Nine Popes was one of the first Barossa GSMs to help re establish the style, gaining national and international recognition. The wine has been placed in Langton’s Classification and is often featured on lists of Australia’s top wines, reflecting its enduring reputation and strong demand from collectors of traditional Barossa blends. The Barossa Valley is one of the country’s most famous wine regions, known for its warm, Mediterranean climate. Hot summers and cool nights allow the grapes to ripen fully while retaining balance. The region is characterised by ancient, well drained soils, including red-brown loam, sandy loam, and clay over limestone, which contribute to the intensity and complexity of the wines.The estate works with old, dry grown vineyards, many over 80 years old, across Tanunda and Lyndoch on these rich, ancient soils.
The Charles Melton Nine Popes 2018 is a classic Barossa GSM blend of Grenache and Shiraz with a small amount of Mataro, which are co fermented to enhance complexity and texture. Following cool, gentle fermentation with whole bunch and whole berry techniques, the wine is matured in a combination of French and American oak for around 24 to 30 months, developing rich structure and layered character. The wine displays deep red fruit, spice, liquorice and savoury notes with a silky texture and balanced tannins. Its depth and complexity make it an excellent match for slow roasted lamb, grilled beef, hearty stews or aged hard cheeses, celebrating both the power and finesse of Barossa old vine fruit. Excellent aging potencial and can be cellared for 15 years or more.
