Charles Heidsieck Brut Reserve Magnum
Champagne Charles Heidsieck is one of the most revered houses in Champagne, founded in 1851 and renowned for its rich, complex and age-worthy style. Based in Reims, the house has built its reputation on meticulous blending and an exceptional library of reserve wines, some of which are aged for many years before use. The vineyards supplying the Brut Réserve are sourced from across the Champagne region, including the Montagne de Reims, Vallée de la Marne and Côte des Blancs, with chalk and limestone soils that provide freshness, minerality and balance. While not fully organic or biodynamic, the house follows sustainable viticultural practices and careful fruit selection. In 2022, the house became B Corp certified, recognising its commitment to high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability, including responsible sourcing, reduced environmental impact and long term sustainability across its production chain.
Charles Heidsieck Brut Réserve NV (Magnum) is a blend typically composed of around 40% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Meunier, with a significant proportion of reserve wines, often exceeding 50%, which contribute to its distinctive richness and depth. The wine is fermented in stainless steel and undergoes extended ageing on lees for a minimum of 3-4 years, far longer than the legal requirement, enhancing texture and complexity. In magnum format, the wine evolves more slowly, preserving freshness while developing greater aromatic nuance. It displays aromas of baked apple, brioche, toasted nuts, citrus peel and subtle spice, with a palate that is creamy yet precise, supported by fine mousse and vibrant acidity. It pairs beautifully with seafood, oysters, roast chicken and creamy cheeses. Drinking superbly now, it will continue to develop over the next 10 years or more in magnum. The wine has received widespread critical acclaim, frequently scoring 95 points, with critics describing it as “rich, complex and beautifully balanced, with remarkable depth for a non-vintage Champagne.”
