Catena Zapata works with specific parcels from their Adrianna vineyard in Gualtallary – in this case, Lot 6. Fermented in French barrels and aged for 18 months, this Malbec presents a typical profile for a cold area. It offers sweet and sour cherry and violet aromas with hints of lavender and sage; the attractive perfume is underlined by the oak. The nuanced profile features a palate of fine, well-integrated, juicy tannins made more expressive by salinity, along with a lengthy raspberry aftertaste. (JH)

A pure and minerally style, with concentrated dark cherry, currant and blackberry flavors that are backed by fresh acidity and lithe tannins. The fresh finish is powerfully elegant, lingering with rich spice and savory accents. (KM)

The 2018 Adrianna Vineyard Fortuna Terrae comes from deeper soils with clay and limestone planted in 1992 in Gualtallary. The grapes were picked a little later in 2018, as they had higher yields, to achieve better acidity. It fermented with 50% full clusters in 225-liter oak barrels and 500-liter roll fermentors and matured in French oak barrels for 18 months. It reveals some austerity and subtle aromas, red and black fruit, some spice and a medium to full-bodied palate with good tension and some austerity, developing a shy note of thyme after some time in the glass. It's very balanced and tasty. 5,040 bottles were filled in October 2019. (LG)

The aromatics here really seduce you with their blackberry and dried-strawberry notes and undertones of wet earth, green tea, dried flowers, stones and dust. Full bodied, tight and very focused with similarly complex character on the palate. More muscle than many previous vintages of this. Extremely long and juicy. Needs at least four or five years to come together.
Description

Produced by Catena Zapata in Argentina’s Uco Valley, Adrianna Vineyard Fortuna Terrae 2018 comes from one of South America’s most celebrated high altitude vineyard sites. The Adrianna Vineyard lies at nearly 1,500 metres above sea level in Gualtallary, Mendoza, where intense mountain sunlight, cool Andean nights and limestone rich alluvial soils create wines of exceptional precision and ageing potential. The Fortuna Terrae parcel, meaning “luck of the earth”, is characterised by deeper soils with greater water retention and a mix of clay, limestone and ancient river deposits, producing a more structured and powerful expression of Malbec within the Adrianna range. The outstanding 2018 Argentine vintage delivered excellent balance, purity and tannin refinement.

Made from 100% Malbec, the grapes are harvested by hand and vinified with careful extraction to preserve purity of fruit and detailed vineyard expression. The wine is aged for around 16 to 18 months in French oak barrels, with a restrained proportion of new oak to support texture and complexity without dominating the terroir-driven profile. Still youthful and tightly coiled, the 2018 shows layered aromas of blackberry, black plum and violet alongside graphite, crushed herbs, cocoa and dark mineral notes. The palate is powerful yet refined, combining dense fruit concentration with vibrant acidity, polished tannins and a deep, structured core. Compared with the more linear River Stones bottling, Fortuna Terrae shows greater breadth and muscularity while retaining the hallmark freshness and precision of Adrianna Vineyard. It has outstanding long-term cellaring potential.
