Boekenhoutskloof The Chocolate Block
Boekenhoutskloof is a pioneering winery in the Franschhoek region of South Africa, established in 1776 and renowned for quality and innovation. The Franschhoek wine region is located in the Western Cape of South Africa, nestled in a valley framed by the Drakenstein and Franschhoek Mountains. Known for its Mediterranean climate, the region enjoys warm, dry summers and cool breezes that moderate ripening, providing long hang-times for grapes. Soils are highly diverse, including decomposed granite, sandstone, shale, and alluvial deposits, which contribute to complexity and mineral character in the wines. Franschhoek is particularly celebrated for Rhône-style blends, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Viognier, producing wines with vibrant fruit, spice, and elegance that express both altitude and terroir. The varied aspects, elevations, and proximity to mountains and ocean create distinctive microclimates for each vineyard, allowing for precise, site driven viticulture.
The Boekenhoutskloof The Chocolate Block is a bold, expressive blend typically led by Syrah with Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon and Viognier contributing complexity and aromatics. The grapes are fermented parcel by parcel with careful extraction before maturation in French oak barrels for around 14 months to build structure, depth and texture. It shows rich dark berry and plum fruit, spice, mocha and floral notes with plush tannins and vibrant acidity. This wine pairs beautifully with grilled red meats, rich tomato sauces, lamb tagine and aged cheeses, celebrating both power and finesse.
