Blank Canvas Upton Downs Pinot Noir 2016
Blank Canvas is an artisanal winery in Marlborough, New Zealand, founded in 2013 by Sophie Parker-Thomas MW and Matt Thomson. They focus on single-vineyard wines with minimal intervention. The Upton Downs vineyard, situated on a 400-metre terrace above the Awatere River, was originally an apricot orchard. The vineyard is sustainably farmed and the wine is vegan friendly, reflecting the winery's commitment to ethical practices.
The 2016 Upton Downs Pinot Noir was hand-harvested and fermented with indigenous yeasts, including 40% whole bunch fermentation. It then aged for 12 months in French oak barrels with 30% new oak, followed by 3 months in stainless steel before bottling. The wine offers aromas of red cherry, cranberry and rose petal, with earthy undertones. On the palate, it presents a silky texture, vibrant acidity and a lingering finish. Pairs well with roast duck, mushroom risotto or grilled salmon.
