Bio Cantina Sociale Orsogna is a cooperative in Abruzzo whose 300 members farm around 1,500 hectares of vineyards around Orsogna, in the hills between the Adriatic and the Maiella massif. Unusually for a large cooperative, 100% of its vineyards are certified organic, while around half are also certified biodynamic by Demeter. The Primitivo is grown around Orsogna at approximately 440 metres above sea level, just 16 kilometres from both the Adriatic and the Maiella, where the combination of elevation, mountain influence and maritime proximity helps retain freshness in the grapes. The vineyards are trained using the traditional Abruzzese pergola system, which requires manual work and allows the vines to develop naturally.
The 2025 Ruminat contains a minimum of 85% Primitivo, with all the grapes coming from Demeter-certified biodynamic vineyards. Fermentation is spontaneous, relying on the indigenous yeasts naturally present on the grapes, and the wine is aged in concrete tanks before spending further time in bottle. It is a generous, full-flavoured expression of Primitivo, with aromas of plum, black cherry and carob leading into a warm, juicy palate with ripe red fruit flavours, moderate tannins and a rounded finish. The 14% alcohol is balanced by fresh acidity, making it an easy match for salumi, tomato-based pasta, pizza, grilled meats and rich roasted dishes.
