Bianka and Daniel Schmitt Riesling 2024
Produced by Bianka and Daniel Schmitt in Rheinhessen, Freiheit Riesling reflects the estate’s commitment to biodynamic farming and natural winemaking, principles that have made the couple among the most influential figures in Germany’s contemporary wine scene. Having transformed the family domaine from a conventional operation into a fully biodynamic estate, the Schmitts focus on healthy soils, biodiversity and minimal intervention both in the vineyard and the cellar. The Freiheit range represents their most direct and transparent expressions of grape variety and place, crafted with the aim of capturing vitality rather than technical perfection. The vineyards are planted on the limestone-rich soils of Rheinhessen, which lend freshness, precision and a distinctive mineral character to the wines.
Made from 100% Riesling, the wine is fermented with indigenous yeasts and handled with a low-intervention philosophy that prioritises purity and texture. Careful cellar work and extended lees contact contribute complexity while preserving the natural energy of the fruit. Aromas of lime, green apple and white peach are layered with notes of citrus blossom, fresh herbs and crushed stone, creating a profile that is both expressive and precise. The palate is dry, vibrant and beautifully balanced, with bright acidity, subtle texture and a pronounced mineral backbone carrying through the long finish. Unforced and authentic in style, Freiheit Riesling captures the vitality of the Schmitts’ biodynamically farmed vineyards while offering a fresh, contemporary interpretation of one of Germany’s most distinctive grape varieties.
