Bianka and Daniel Schmitt Pinot Noir 2023
Produced by Bianka and Daniel Schmitt in Rheinhessen, Nieder-Flörsheimer Pinot Noir reflects the couple’s reputation as pioneers of Germany’s natural wine movement and their commitment to biodynamic farming. The family estate, now run by the younger generation, has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past two decades, moving away from conventional viticulture towards a philosophy centred on healthy soils, biodiversity and minimal intervention. All vineyards are farmed biodynamically, with the Schmitts believing that living soils and balanced ecosystems are essential to producing wines of authenticity and character. The vineyards around Nieder-Flörsheim benefit from limestone-rich soils and a cool continental climate, providing ideal conditions for Pinot Noir to develop both aromatic complexity and freshness.
Made from 100% Pinot Noir, the wine is fermented with indigenous yeasts and crafted with a low-intervention approach that avoids unnecessary manipulation in both vineyard and cellar. The aim is to capture the transparency of the fruit and the identity of the site rather than impose a heavily polished style. Aromas of wild strawberry, red cherry and raspberry are layered with notes of rose petals, subtle spice and earthy undertones, while gentle élevage adds texture without overwhelming the wine’s delicate character. The palate is vibrant and energetic, combining silky tannins with bright acidity and a pronounced mineral thread derived from the limestone soils. Light on its feet yet full of personality, Nieder-Flörsheimer Pinot Noir offers a pure and expressive interpretation of German Pinot Noir, balancing natural winemaking with precision and drinkability.
