Bianka and Daniel Schmitt Muller Thurgau 2023
Produced by Bianka and Daniel Schmitt in Rheinhessen, Freiheit Müller-Thurgau embodies the couple’s progressive approach to biodynamic farming and natural winemaking. The Schmitt family has cultivated vines for generations, but it was Bianka and Daniel who transformed the estate into one of Germany’s leading voices in low-intervention wine. Working entirely biodynamically, they focus on fostering healthy soils, biodiversity and a balanced vineyard ecosystem, believing that great wines are made in the vineyard rather than the cellar. The Freiheit range reflects this philosophy of freedom and authenticity, allowing each grape variety to express itself with minimal manipulation and maximum transparency. Their vineyards are rooted in the limestone-rich soils of Rheinhessen, a region increasingly recognised for producing wines of energy, purity and character.
Made from 100% Müller-Thurgau, the wine challenges conventional expectations of a variety often associated with simple, aromatic styles. Fermented with indigenous yeasts and crafted with minimal intervention, Freiheit highlights the grape’s capacity for texture, freshness and complexity. Aromas of green apple, pear and citrus peel are complemented by notes of white flowers, fresh herbs and a subtle mineral edge. The palate is lively and expressive, combining bright acidity with a gentle textural richness gained through lees contact and careful cellar work. Dry, energetic and highly drinkable, it offers a more serious and terroir-driven interpretation of Müller-Thurgau than is commonly encountered, reflecting both the biodynamic philosophy of the estate and the distinctive character of Rheinhessen’s limestone soils.
