Au Bon Climate Pinot Noir 2019 Half Bottle
Au Bon Climat was founded in 1982 in Santa Barbara County by the late Jim Clendenen, a pioneering figure in Californian winemaking who championed a restrained, Burgundian-inspired style. The winery sources fruit primarily from cool climate vineyards in the Santa Maria Valley and surrounding areas, where Pacific Ocean influences bring fog and long growing seasons. Soils here are typically marine derived, including sandy loam and calcareous clay, contributing to freshness and structure. The estate works with sustainably farmed vineyards, many of which are certified, and follows a low-intervention philosophy in the cellar.
Au Bon Climat Pinot Noir 2019 is made from 100% Pinot Noir, sourced from select cool climate sites. The grapes are fermented in small lots with a proportion of whole clusters, using indigenous yeasts to enhance complexity. The wine is aged for around 10 to 12 months in French oak barrels, with a modest percentage of new oak to maintain balance. The 2019 vintage offered excellent growing conditions, resulting in wines with both ripeness and acidity. This Pinot Noir is showing signs of bottle aging with flavours of dark cherry compot, notes of dried strawberry and raspberry, alongside hints of aniseed spice, white pepper and forest floor. The palate is supple and finely structured, pairing well with roast duck, grilled salmon and mushroom dishes.
