Armand Heitz is a dynamic Burgundian estate based in Chassagne-Montrachet, led by Armand Heitz, whose family has deep roots in Burgundy through both vineyard ownership and farming. Since taking over the domaine, Armand Heitz has focused on sustainable and regenerative viticulture, emphasising biodiversity, soil health and traditional farming methods across the family’s vineyards. The estate farms parcels in some of Burgundy’s most prestigious appellations, including Corton Charlemagne on the hill of Corton in the northern Côte de Beaune. This Grand Cru vineyard is planted on steep slopes with thin limestone and marl soils over a rocky limestone bedrock, providing exceptional drainage and imparting the tension, minerality and longevity for which the wine is famous. Farming is carried out organically with many biodynamic principles, including ploughing by horse in certain parcels and the encouragement of natural vineyard ecosystems. The 2021 vintage in Burgundy was challenging due to frost and reduced yields, but the best producers crafted wines of remarkable precision, freshness and classical balance.
Armand Heitz Corton-Charlemagne 2021 is made from Chardonnay only, hand harvested from carefully selected Grand Cru parcels on the Corton hillside. The grapes are gently pressed before fermentation with indigenous yeasts, followed by ageing for approximately 11 months in French oak barrels, with restrained use of new oak to preserve the purity of the terroir. The wine displays aromas of citrus zest, white peach, hazelnut and white flowers, layered with flinty mineral notes and subtle oak spice. The palate is powerful yet focused, combining richness with vibrant acidity and a long, saline finish characteristic of Corton-Charlemagne. It pairs beautifully with lobster, turbot, roast poultry in cream sauces and aged Comté cheese. While already expressive with decanting, the 2021 has the structure and acidity to evolve for 12–20 years or more.
