Argiano is one of the most historic estates in Montalcino, founded in 1580 and centred on a Renaissance villa in the south-west of the appellation near Sant’Angelo in Colle. The estate has earned a reputation for producing refined, terroir-driven Sangiovese and today is owned by Brazilian entrepreneur André Santos Esteves, with winemaking led by Bernardino Sani. Argiano is certified organic, having converted its vineyards to organic farming with a strong focus on sustainability and biodiversity. The vineyards lie between approximately 280 and 310 metres above sea level on soils of marl, limestone and ancient marine sediments with clay and galestro, contributing structure and aromatic complexity. The 2023 vintage in Montalcino was marked by a cooler, more challenging growing season with careful selection required, producing wines of freshness, bright acidity and classic varietal expression.
Argiano Rosso di Montalcino 2023 is made from Sangiovese grapes harvested by hand and fermented in stainless steel tanks to preserve purity of fruit. The wine is aged for around 6 to 9 months, primarily in large oak casks, followed by further refinement in bottle before release, allowing integration while maintaining vibrancy. The wine shows lifted aromas of red cherry, wild berry and violet, with hints of spice and earth. The palate is medium bodied, fresh and supple, with fine tannins and a balanced, savoury finish. It pairs beautifully with tomato-based pasta, grilled meats, roast poultry and aged pecorino cheese. The 2023 is already drinking well in its youth for its freshness and charm, yet it can develop additional complexity over the next 5 to 8 years.
