Argiano is one of the historic estates of Montalcino, with origins dating back to the 16th century and a long standing reputation for producing elegant, terroir driven Brunello. Located in the south western sector of the appellation near Sant’Angelo in Colle, the estate benefits from a favourable microclimate influenced by maritime breezes and significant diurnal variation. The vineyards are situated between 280 and 310 metres above sea level on soils composed of marl, limestone, clay and ancient marine sediments, which contribute to both structure and aromatic complexity. Argiano is certified organic, with a strong focus on sustainability and biodiversity across its vineyards. The wines are produced without animal derived fining agents and are generally considered suitable for vegans. The 2020 vintage in Montalcino was characterised by a warm growing season balanced by well timed rainfall, producing wines with ripe fruit, freshness and approachability.
Argiano Brunello di Montalcino 2020 is made Sangiovese grapes that are harvested by hand and fermented with indigenous yeasts in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. The wine undergoes a long maceration to extract colour, tannin and aromatic complexity, followed by ageing for approximately 24 months in large Slavonian oak casks and a period of bottle ageing before release, in accordance with Brunello regulations. The wine shows aromas of ripe cherry, plum, dried herbs, violet and subtle spice, with hints of tobacco and earthy minerality. The palate is structured yet refined, with firm but polished tannins, vibrant acidity and a long, savoury finish. It pairs beautifully with roast lamb, game, rich pasta dishes and aged cheeses. The 2020 is already approachable with decanting but will continue to evolve over the next 10-15 years. Early critical reception has been very positive, with scores in the mid-90s, with one critic describing it as “a beautifully balanced Brunello with purity of fruit and impressive finesse.”
