By Farr Irrewarra Pinot Noir
By Farr Wines was founded in 1994 by Robyn and Gary Farr in the cool Moorabool Valley near Geelong in Victoria, Australia. It still remains a family run estate focused on elegant cool climate Pinot Noir. The Irrewarra single vineyard project sits on gently sloping volcanic plains with grey sandy clay loams and dark loams with gravel fragments, deriving natural moisture and earthy character from high annual rainfall. Vineyards are sustainably tended and working towards organic principles, though not formally certified. Irrewarra is understood to be an Aboriginal word meaning “long spear throw”, reflecting the traditional hunting and farming country of the area and the wider cultural heritage of the land where the vineyard sits.
The Irrewarra Pinot Noir is 100% hand harvested Pinot Noir, fermented with careful extraction to preserve purity and structure, then matured in French oak barrels, a portion of which are new, to add subtle complexity. This wine shows layered sweet and sour cherry, spice, earth and fine silky tannins with balanced acidity and a softly mineral finish. Serve slightly chilled with grilled quail, duck breast, mushroom risotto or rosemary scented lamb for a harmonious pairing.
