Richter, Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Grosses Gewächs is one of the most prestigious dry Rieslings from the Mosel and a wine that embodies the estate’s long history of excellence. The family has been cultivating vines in the Mosel since 1680, making it one of Germany’s oldest wine estates, and today the winery is run by the ninth generation under Dirk Richter. While many Mosel producers are best known for their Prädikat wines, Richter has also established a reputation for producing exceptional dry Rieslings from the region’s finest sites. The Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr vineyard is among the Mosel’s most revered terroirs, a steep, south-facing amphitheatre of Devonian blue slate overlooking the Mosel River. The combination of old vines, exceptional sun exposure and slate-rich soils produces wines of remarkable concentration, finesse and longevity, while retaining the elegance and mineral precision that define great Mosel Riesling.
Made from 100% Riesling and classified as a VDP Grosses Gewächs, the wine is sourced from the finest parcels within Juffer-Sonnenuhr and vinified with a traditional, low-intervention approach that allows the vineyard to speak clearly. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts, followed by extended ageing on the lees to build texture and complexity. The 2022 vintage combines impressive ripeness with vibrant acidity, resulting in a wine of both power and precision. Aromas of white peach, ripe citrus, apricot and yellow plum are layered with notes of crushed slate, wild herbs, white flowers and a subtle smoky reduction characteristic of the site. The palate is concentrated yet weightless, driven by crystalline acidity and an intense mineral backbone that carries through the exceptionally long finish. Although already captivating, the wine remains youthful and tightly wound, with the structure and balance to evolve gracefully for two decades or more, revealing the profound complexity for which Juffer-Sonnenuhr is renowned.
