Rafael Mouchao 2021
Initially this vineyard started as a cork producing area. Owned by an english family that immigrated in the early 1800s dedicated to exporting the finest ports, corks, oils and more. While mostly focusing on their exports, the newphew of the founder was the Chairman of the National Phylloxera Commission, which was instrumental in the fight against the invasive phylloxera insect that decimated much of the wine regions. In the earlier 1900s, the Mouchao estate became how it is today with flourishing vineyards and a larger focus on exporting wine. The soils are rich in nutrients and located on the slopes of the Mouchão dam.
Aged in Portuguese chesnut and French oak barrels for 12 months, this Mouchao is a beautifully smooth and complex red. On the nose this red offers aromas of spice and liqourice, mixing in a deep red color. On the palate this wine is well balanced with ripe tannins and even acidity carrying deep red fruits through every sip.
