Created on the Tuscan coast near Riparbella in the Val di Cecina, Caiarossa is one of Tuscany’s most distinctive and ambitious blends, bringing together the structure of Bordeaux varieties, the Mediterranean character of Rhône grapes and the freshness of Sangiovese. Founded in 1998 by French winemaker François Massoc, the estate was acquired by Eric Albada Jelgersma in 2004, joining a portfolio that also included the renowned Margaux estates Château Giscours and Château du Tertre. Located close to the Tyrrhenian Sea, Caiarossa’s vineyards benefit from a unique coastal climate, with warm Mediterranean days tempered by sea breezes, while the complex soils of clay, limestone and minerals provide the foundation for wines of depth and elegance. The 2005 vintage was a more classical year in Tuscany, producing wines marked by balance, freshness and refined structure, qualities that have allowed Caiarossa to develop beautifully with age.
The 2005 Caiarossa is an intricate blend of Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, with each variety contributing a different element to the final wine. Bordeaux grapes bring structure and longevity, Sangiovese adds freshness and Tuscan identity, while the Rhône varieties contribute spice, Mediterranean herbs and aromatic complexity. After careful vinification and maturation in French oak, the wine now reveals layers of black cherry, blackberry, plum and cassis alongside violet, lavender, black olive, graphite, cedar, tobacco, leather, pepper and subtle balsamic notes. The palate is beautifully integrated, combining silky tannins, vibrant acidity and a savoury mineral character with a long, complex finish. Mature, elegant and highly individual, it is a superb companion to wild boar, grilled meats, roast lamb, aged cheeses and rich Mediterranean cuisine.
