Château Bonalgue Pomerol 2016

Château Bonalgue is a historic family owned estate in Pomerol, located on the western side of the appellation near some of the region’s most respected properties, including Château Clinet, Château La Pointe and Château Nénin. Established in the 18th century, the estate has remained dedicated to producing traditional Pomerol wines that express the elegance and richness of the appellation. The vineyards cover around 9 hectares and are planted on the sandy gravel soils typical of this part of Pomerol, with areas of clay and iron rich deposits that contribute to depth, structure and the distinctive earthy character found in great Right Bank wines. The estate focuses on sustainable vineyard management, including careful canopy control and yield management to achieve optimal ripeness. The 2016 vintage in Bordeaux was exceptional, with a wet spring followed by a warm, dry summer and ideal late season conditions, producing wines with remarkable concentration, freshness and ageing potential.

Château Bonalgue Pomerol 2016 is a classic Right Bank blend dominated by Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc, typically around 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. The grapes are carefully harvested and fermented in temperature controlled tanks, with maceration tailored to extract colour, aroma and fine tannins while preserving the softness associated with Pomerol. The wine is aged for approximately 18 months in French oak barrels, allowing the structure to integrate and adding complexity without masking the fruit. Aromas of ripe plum, black cherry and blackberry are layered with notes of violet, cedar, spice and earthy minerality. The palate is elegant and supple, with silky tannins, balanced acidity and a long, refined finish. It pairs beautifully with roast lamb, duck, beef, mushroom dishes and mature cheeses. Drinking beautifully now after careful decanting, the 2016 has the balance and structure to develop further over the next 10-15 years. The wine has received strong critical recognition, with scores in the low to mid 90s, praised for its “classic Pomerol elegance, purity of fruit and refined structure.”
