Produced by Bodegas Roda in the heart of Rioja Alta, Roda Reserva is one of the modern classics of Spanish wine, combining meticulous vineyard selection with a deep respect for the traditions of the region. Founded in the late 1980s near the historic station district of Haro, the estate quickly established itself as one of Rioja’s benchmark producers through its focus on old-vine Tempranillo and terroir expression rather than large-scale blending. The fruit is sourced from a network of mature bush-trained vineyards, many between 30 and 50 years of age, planted on limestone and clay-limestone soils at varying altitudes across Rioja Alta and neighbouring areas. Sustainable viticulture, low yields and careful parcel selection form the foundation of the estate’s philosophy, with each vintage blended to capture freshness, balance and the distinctive character of the region.
Made predominantly from Tempranillo with a small proportion of Graciano and, depending on the vintage, Garnacha, Roda Reserva is fermented in oak vats and aged in French oak barrels before further bottle maturation. The style is defined by precision and elegance rather than overt oak influence, allowing the quality of the fruit to remain at the forefront. The wine typically displays aromas of black cherry, blackberry and plum, layered with notes of cedar, cocoa, sweet spices and Mediterranean herbs. The palate is polished and harmonious, with fine-grained tannins, vibrant acidity and a savoury mineral thread that carries through the long finish. Balancing the richness of Rioja with a refined, contemporary sensibility, Roda Reserva is both approachable in its youth and capable of developing additional complexity with extended cellaring.
