hirsch-vineyards-san-andreas-fault-pinot-noir
Hirsch Vineyards San Andreas Fault Pinot Noir 2021

Hirsch Vineyards is one of California’s most revered cool climate Pinot Noir estates, located on the extreme Sonoma Coast near Fort Ross. Located in the Seaview AVA, that was established in 2012, which is a far smaller and more specific region than the vast West Sonoma Coast AVA. The Pacific Ocean exerts a defining influence here with vineyards just 3 miles from the coast. The San Andreas Fault cuvée is a blend of multiple estate blocks and serves as a comprehensive expression of the vineyard as a whole. The site lies along the San Andreas Fault line, and the soils are correspondingly complex, consisting of fractured sandstone, shale and uplifted marine sediments that are low in fertility and exceptionally well drained. The vineyards are exposed to persistent ocean winds, fog and cool temperatures, extending the growing season and preserving natural acidity. Farming is certified organic and biodynamic, with meticulous manual vineyard work aimed at expressing the individuality of each parcel. The 2021 vintage on the Sonoma Coast is regarded as exceptional, with small yields and ideal conditions producing wines of concentration, clarity and balance.

Hirsch Vineyards San Andreas Fault Pinot Noir 2021 is made from 100 per cent Pinot Noir, sourced from a selection of estate blocks to capture the full character of the vineyard. The grapes are hand harvested and fermented with indigenous yeasts, often including a proportion of whole clusters to build structure and aromatic complexity. The wine is aged for approximately 12 to 16 months in French oak barrels, with moderate use of new oak to support the fruit without overshadowing it. The wine displays expressive aromas of black cherry liqueur, raspberry and stewed strawberry, layered with notes of white pepper, forest floor, subtle baking spice and a subtle saline minerality reflective of its coastal origin. The palate is finely balanced, combining depth with energy, supported by silky tannins, vibrant acidity and a long, mineral-driven finish. It pairs beautifully with roast duck, lamb, game birds and earthy vegetarian dishes. Drinking beautifully now with decanting, it will continue to evolve over the next 10-15 years, gaining further complexity and nuance.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0700/5061/1516/files/20260502_141018_4496f06d-3d18-4b57-9dd6-a8d97209a231.jpg?v=1777735042
