Ex Voto is Guigal’s flagship Hermitage, sourced from old vines in some of the appellation’s most celebrated historic lieux-dits, including Les Bessards, Le Méal, Greffieux and L’Hermite. The name “Ex Voto” refers to a traditional votive offering, symbolising Guigal’s tribute to the exceptional terroir of Hermitage, a granite hillside widely regarded as the finest source of Syrah in the world. The 2013 vintage was one of the latest and most classical in recent decades, with a cool growing season, slow ripening and naturally low yields producing wines of remarkable freshness, precision and ageing potential.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eMade from 100% Syrah, Ermitage Ex Voto Rouge is fermented traditionally before spending around 42 months in 100% new French oak barrels, a hallmark of Guigal’s meticulous approach. Despite the lengthy élevage, the oak serves to frame rather than dominate the wine’s immense concentration and mineral character. The 2013 vintage displays aromas of cassis, blackberry and dark cherry intertwined with violet, cracked black pepper, smoked bacon, black olive, graphite, liquorice and crushed granite. The palate is powerful yet impeccably balanced, combining immense depth with vibrant acidity, finely sculpted tannins and extraordinary mineral tension that carries through to a seemingly endless finish. Still youthful, it is only beginning to reveal its complexity and is expected to continue evolving beautifully for another three to four decades.
