The 2019 Settlement Vineyard Pinot Noir is their debut release from a one-hectare parcel in the Omaka Valley, in Marlborough’s Southern Valleys. The north-facing hillside block, known as the Back Block, was planted in 2009 to 100% Pinot Noir clone 777 at a high density of 3,788 vines per hectare. Its low-vigour clay soils, over wind-blown loess, naturally restrict growth and contribute to small bunches and berries. The 2019 growing season was exceptionally dry, while difficult conditions during flowering and berry sizing resulted in very low yields and thick-skinned, concentrated fruit, giving the wine unusual density and structure. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e The 2019 Settlement Vineyard Pinot Noir is 100% Pinot Noir and was hand harvested on 20 March. Half of the fruit was placed whole bunch into an open-top fermenter, with the remainder crushed over the top. After a five-day cool period, natural fermentation began, with hand-plunging throughout the 15-day fermentation. The wine was then pressed directly to 100% French oak barriques, 35% of which were new and lightly toasted, where it underwent natural malolactic fermentation. After 12 months in oak, it spent a further three months in tank before being bottled without filtration. The result is a powerful, highly structured Marlborough Pinot Noir, with ripe red and blue fruits, dark cherry and plum, layered with dried herbs, forest floor, baking spice and a savoury whole-bunch character. Dense and textural, it has firm yet finely polished tannins, vibrant acidity and considerable length.
