The Martinborough Terrace is formed from ancient alluvial gravels, with free-draining soils that naturally restrict vine vigour and encourage small, concentrated berries. Ata Rangi has a long-standing commitment to responsible vineyard management, with organic farming practised across parts of the estate and certification achieved for individual vineyards at different stages; Crimson itself should therefore not be described as a certified organic wine. The wine was created in 2003 to support Project Crimson, a conservation initiative protecting New Zealand’s native pohutukawa and rata trees. Ata Rangi’s approach in the vineyard and cellar is deliberately restrained, with an emphasis on allowing the character of the fruit and site to show clearly. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e The 2020 Crimson is made from 100% Pinot Noir, with approximately 90% of the fruit destemmed and 10% retained as whole bunches. Fermentation takes place in open-top stainless-steel tanks using indigenous yeasts, with extraction carefully managed to preserve fragrance and fine tannins. The wine is then matured in French oak barriques for around 12 months, with approximately 20% new oak, before bottling. Ata Rangi avoids cultured yeasts, enzymes and fining products in its minimalist winemaking approach. The 2020 shows bright red cherry, raspberry, ripe plum and baked strawberry, with floral, dried-herb and spice notes adding complexity. The palate is fresh and finely textured, combining taut acidity with supple fruit and fine-grained tannins.
