akutain-gran-reserva
Akutain Gran Reserva 2015

Bodega Akutain is a small family estate located near the town of Haro in Rioja Alta, one of the most prestigious subregions of Rioja known for producing elegant, long lived wines. The estate was founded in 1975 by Juan Peñagaricano Akutain, who planted vineyards after years studying traditional Rioja winemaking and visiting historic bodegas in the region. Today the winery is run by his son Jon Peñagaricano, continuing the family’s philosophy of small scale, grower produced Rioja made exclusively from their own vineyards. The estate farms around 6.5 hectares of vines planted on clay-limestone soils at moderate altitude, producing balanced grapes with freshness and structure. Viticulture follows traditional, low-intervention methods with hand harvesting and minimal chemical use and the vineyards are generally farmed according to organic principles though not widely certified. The 2015 vintage in Rioja was considered outstanding, producing ripe, concentrated wines with excellent balance between fruit intensity and freshness.

Akutain Gran Reserva 2015 is produced only in exceptional vintages (approximately 2 or 3 vintages per decade) and represents the estate’s most traditional and age worthy style of Rioja. The wine is composed of approximately 93% Tempranillo, 5% Garnacha and 2% Viura sourced from an older estate vineyard of higher altitude, Gembres (650m), planted in 1975 and 1986. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in fibreglass vats for around nine days, followed by malolactic fermentation in tank before ageing for for at least 28 months in well-seasoned oak barrels, roughly 70% American and 30% French. The wine is then aged for at least an additional 30 months in bottle before release, far exceeding Rioja’s Gran Reserva requirements. Aromas show black raspberry, cassis, cigar box, dried herbs and sweet spice, while the palate is structured yet refined with fine tannins and a long savoury finish. It pairs beautifully with roast lamb, grilled steak, game dishes and aged cheeses. Drinking well now with decanting, it will continue to evolve for 15–20 years. The wine received 95 points from Luis Gutiérrez, who described it as “a classical, long-aging red… with plenty of power and very high-quality tannins”.
