Canalicchio di Sopra is one of Montalcino’s historic wineries. Founded in the early 1960s, their first wine was released in 1966, and the following year they were one of the 12 founding members of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino. It is this kind of quality-focussed, forward thinking that marks Canalicchio as one of the greats. That, and their location on the northern slope of the hill of Montalcino, where the wines balance power with finesse. Francesco Ripaccioli has emerged as one of the stand-out winemakers of Montalcino, crafting powerful, classic-leaning wines loaded with personality. This wine has aromas of freshly cut flowers, sweet red berries, mint, anise and tobacco lift out of the glass. Marries expressive aromatics and wonderfully translucent fruit, all supported by a classic sense of structure. This is a fabulous Rosso with tons of near and medium-term appeal.
