90 - Vinous

The 2023 Pinot Noir (Sonoma County) is a gorgeous appellation-level wine. Bright red-toned fruit, cedar, cinnamon, pipe tobacco, game and a healthy slathering of sweet oak lend notable exuberance. This flashy Pinot is not the last word on complexity, but it is quite delicious and sure to be a crowd-pleaser.

92 - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Matured for 11 months in 27% new French oak, the 2023 Pinot Noir Sonoma County has pure aromas of cranberry, raspberry, blood orange, forest floor and dark spice. The medium-bodied palate is concentrated and layered with silky tannins, vibrant acidity and a long, nuanced finish. 2,415 cases were made.
Description

Founded in the late 1970s in the Russian River Valley, Williams Selyem built its reputation on meticulous vineyard sourcing, low yields and a restrained, Burgundian-inspired approach to winemaking. This Sonoma County cuvée is a multi-vineyard blend drawn from carefully selected sites across the region, including cooler Russian River Valley parcels, where fog influence and maritime breezes help preserve acidity, aromatic lift and freshness. Sustainable vineyard practices and careful hand harvesting underpin the estate’s focus on quality and precision.

Made from 100% Pinot Noir, the wine is vinified with gentle extraction to preserve purity of fruit and site expression, followed by maturation in French oak barrels, including a proportion of new oak to add structure and complexity. The 2023 shows expressive aromas of red cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry alongside notes of rose petal, baking spice and subtle forest floor. The palate is silky and layered, with bright acidity, fine-grained tannins and a supple, fruit-driven core supported by elegant oak integration. Polished yet vibrant, it captures the hallmark style of Williams Selyem: generous California fruit balanced by finesse and structure. It pairs beautifully with roast poultry, grilled salmon, duck dishes and mushroom-based cuisine.
